 Sustainability

Every Grain Counts if we want to feed 8 billion people.
Every Grain Counts if we want to consume less and save the planet.
Every Grain Counts if we want less farmland and more nature.
And Every Grain Counts if we want to make food taste better.
Because when we up-cycle every grain, instead of wasting it, we can create new exciting food ingredients.
So tasty, people will choose them over traditional options.
So good, they can help restore human and planetary health.
We are Agrain. The re-harvest company where every grain counts.

The food system is broken!

And it requires bold change to repair the system.

The food system and its dysfunctional value chain is fueling the climate crisis. More than 30% of all food is never eaten. 25% of global CO2 emissions come from food and agriculture. 50% of all land is used for food production and agriculture – of which 33%* is used to produce crops for feed.

According to The Global Footprint Network we are currently consuming at a rate where we would need 1,75 planets per year, and the pace is going up!

And food miles are getting longer and longer – vegetables often have travelled 2000 km before reaching your table – or the bin!

30% of all food produced is lost

According to the UN nearly 30% of the World’s agricultural land is occupied to produce food that is ultimately never consumed!

Spent grain from the brewery industry is an untapped resource packed with fibre, protein, and aroma.

Beer is the 3rd most consumed beverage in the world*, only surpassed by water and tea, and every year, breweries all over the world produce and discard more than 40 million tons of spent grain, making it one of the biggest side streams in the food industry.

After brewers have malted and mashed the grains to extract their sugars, the grains transform to a new fibre, protein, and aroma-packed resource. So not only are we wasting nutrition, we are also using energy and land to do so. The double trouble of the food system in a nutshell.

Taking action

The world calls for innovative circular processes in our food systems.

Instead of wasting valuable resources and only using fractions of them, we turn them into new nutritious and delicious ingredients that can boost a wide range of food.

This is upcycling and this is what we do!

By up-cycling spent grains, we not only provide high-quality ingredients but also contribute to the preservation of biodiversity.

Bake the world a better place

The nutritional benefits of spent grain flour calls for immediate exploration. With 20 % of protein, 50 % of dietary fibers, low calories and mouthwatering authentic aromas and colours, we offer a new star ingredient for all types of bread, baked goods, and snacks.

To produce 1 kg of standard baking flour, it takes ca. 2 m2 of farmland - land you save if you use 1 kg of spent grain flour instead.

Every grain counts

By upcycling spent grain to human food, we are increasing the available food, and nutrients, without cultivating more land.

And simultaneously every grain contains nutrients that will be added to the human diet when we upcycle the side streams from the food industry.

Global Development Goals

The United Nations defined in total 17 Sustainable Development Goals to end poverty, hunger, realise the human rights of all, achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls, as well as to ensure the lasting protection of the planet and its natural resources.

These four Sustainable Development Goals are central to Agrain.
